Carnivals Held in Rio de Janeiro

Everybody knows about the festival that takes place in Rio de Janeiro it is famous worldwide.

I suppose it can be traced back to the days of the Old Portuguese and African settlers in Brazil. Rich in tradition and culture the festival brought the traditional Brazilian Samba to the fore in the early part of the 20th Century, a dance that is now recognized as the dance of Brazil.

The carnival itself will start 4 days prior to Ash Wednesday and can last anywhere from 4 days up to around a fortnight. Most of the Samba schools in Rio proudly parade through the lined streets showing of their dances to the thousands of visitors that have come to see this spectacle. Different schools will choose different themes to base their dances on.

Before they even consider the dance routines they must first make a float for them to perform on and this can often take up to a couple of months to make and decorate just right.

The parade can start early in the morning at approximately 7 O clock and last for up to twelve hours, which makes it a very long day for the dancers and performers.

There is nothing more exciting than traveling to Rio de Janeiro and experiencing the whole carnival for your-self. This is a great way to learn all about the culture and history of Brazil. You will also get a warm welcome from the friendly people of Rio as they invite you to enjoy the carnival atmosphere.
